Synonymous with luxury, elegance and located within the prestigious Haut-Médoc wine-growing region, Pauillac boasts 1200 hectares of vineyards and three of the five first-growth châteaux of Bordeaux; Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild. Other prestigious second growth châteaux include Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, Château Pichon-Longueville-Lalande and Château Duhart-Milon. The wines of Pauillac are often considered the quintessence of luxury Bordeaux fine wines.
It took until the 17th century for Pauillac to become under vine. Positioned on the west bank of the Gironde, Pauillac is somewhat more elevated than the surrounding area, rising to an impressive peak of nearly 30 meters. With a supreme gravely soil and a forest to the west; sheltering the vines, it offers superior conditions for growing outstanding wines; with the choicest of vintages aging 100 years or longer. Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape variety, blended with the esteemed Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
