Aconcagua Valley

Taking its name both from the province where it is located, San Felipe de Aconcagua, and also from the Aconcagua Mountain, today Aconcagua is a celebrated Denomination of Origin (DO) defined by the Chilean Appellation system. 

The region is composed of four prime wine districts; Casablanca Valley, Aconcagua Costa, Aconcagua Valley and Leyda Valley within the beautiful Valparaíso Region. 

It was long thought that this hot, dry valley was not suitable for growing wine grapes. The Chilean wine pioneer Don Maximiano Errazuriz was ridiculed when he first planted vines here. However the quality of the region's unsurpassable Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot has certainly turned this opinion around. 

The regions master winery Seña was placed ahead of both Château Lafite and Château Margaux in blind tasting held in Berlin in 2004, a milestone for the Chilean wine industry. 

Aconcagua’s small (1,098-hectare) winegrowing area is well known for its red wines. With a Mediterranean climate, and bathed in lush melt water from the Aconcagua mountain peaks, Aconcagua boasts an ideal terrain with soils of clay and sand to the east and rich granite and clay to the west. 

The primary grape varieties grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carménère, and coastal Sauvignon Blanc.
